This is the first instalment of “Tales From the Back Issues Bins”, an ongoing series of reviews focusing on older comics. We hope you will enjoy reading them and discover some new titles.

“The fantasy is real, and the reality is fantastic. AIR is a compelling and completely original read that thrills, surprises and delights.”

—Gail Simone

One of the great things about being a back issue seller is that you come across great books you may have overlooked when they were first published or that you may have even completely forgotten about. One such title is Air, from G. Willow Wilson and M.K. Perker. I came across the first few issues of the series nearly a decade ago and decided to give it a shot, despite, I ashamedly confess, to being completely ignorant of their work at the time. I really enjoyed it. But, I did not have the remaining issues and quickly forgot about the title amidst constant requests for hot books and mainstream titles from my clientele.

Flash forward to a few months ago when I purchased a collection of quality TPBs and graphic novels. Lo and behold: a complete set of Air TPBs, much to my delight! Well, I quickly prioritized them in my reading stack as I suddenly recalled the pleasure I had reading the beginning of the story oh, so long ago.

I must say, it was well worth the wait.

Air is a magical tale, full of wonder and hope. It takes the reader on a surreal journey, as our heroine Blythe—an airline attendant with a philosophy degree— finds herself embroiled in an international, no, make that an interdimensional and extratemporal web of intrigue and mystery as she deals with the hard to accept reality that she is destined for something greater. Did I mention the espionage? Or the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl? What about the love story?

Air. Breathe it all in. And enjoy.
